The Capricorn Food and Wine Festival is held along Rockhampton’s Riverside Precinct. Fishing the Fitzroy

While you’re here, why not try your hand at a spot of barrumundi fishing on the Fitzroy River. With over 300 days of sunshine a year and warm winter weather, Rockhampton is a fishing destination to visit all year round. 

Barramundi season is open from midday 1 February to midday 1 November each year. King Threadfin are also found in abundance in the Fitzroy River (Tunuba), the largest river on the eastern seaboard of Australia. With a total catchment area of 156,000 square kilometres, the river provides prime estuary and freshwater fishing country.

No matter who you are, how you want to fish, or what you want to catch, the Fitzroy River (Tunuba) is ready to welcome you.

Visit the Capricorn Coast

Stretching 95km from Stanage Bay to the mouth of the Fitzroy River, the coast is speckled with small townships, beautiful beaches, fantastic fishing and much more. Stop in at the main coastal hub of Yeppoon to browse the shops or wander along the foreshore, or head along the coast to Emu Park to enjoy fish and chips on the beach and visit the Singing Ship monument, commemorating Captain Cooks’ exploration. Or if you are looking for a tree change, head up to the township of Byfield to explore Byfield National Park.

The coastal life would not be complete without the amazing Keppel Bay Islands, with Great Keppel Island just 30 minutes off the coast of Yeppoon. Snorkel, trek and dive your ways around the islands and explore what the Capricorn Coast has to offer.
